3D printed bricks from eggshells produced by Manufactura can contribute to solving the problems of environmental pollution and food waste.

The ceramics industry generates large emissions because of the use of fossil fuels, waste from the production process is also significant. So MANUFACTURA decided to reuse eggshells – lightweight, easy-to-find waste products – for construction operations. Eggshells, when combined with bio-adhesives, produce a mixture that solidifies without heating, which is ideal for 3D printing.

The Eggshell project solves two problems: the environmental impact of the ceramics industry and the waste of food and other organic matter in Mexico.

The printed result is an eggshell brick wall from 105 blocks and a pillar from 26 blocks. The raw materials for making bricks are taken from the waste of many restaurants in Mexico City.

This new project combines computer-aided designs and digital manufacturing to turn waste into useful byproducts. In addition, it also contributes to raising awareness of Mexico's pollution problems and the environmental impact of the ceramics industry.

This company has successfully introduced a new eco-friendly production method resulting in a cyclical eco-friendly production and life system. The company also opens up new job opportunities.

3D printed bricks have been widely used around the world, even in space. In October 2022, the US space agency (NASA) asked scientists to devise a new method to build a base on the moon that could withstand extreme conditions. The experiment by the University of Central Florida demonstrates the possibility of building a base from 3D-printed bricks made from lunar rocks combined with salt water.
