Scientists from the Center for Advanced Research (Cinvestav), Coahuila state, Mexico, have just announced that they have successfully produced ecological cement by recycling glass and urban waste.

Mexico invented ecological cement made from glass debris.

Cinvestav affirms that this is a new choice for Portland cement - the most popular type of cement in the construction industry today. It has the advantage of durability but has a high level of pollution due to the production process emitting much CO2.

The newly invented cement can utilise any collected scrap glass, which is then washed, dried, crushed, rolled into powder and then mixed with limestone.

This mixture is again chemically activated with alkali metal compounds to turn into a plastic compound similar to regular cement mixed with water before hardening.

Cinvestav's research team confirmed that after hardening, this type of cement has superior mechanical characteristics similar to specialised cement for concrete production.

This type of cement is considered ecological because it utilises glass waste sources, and the production process emits little CO2 into the atmosphere.

The market that the inventors believe is most suitable for using this new product is the industry of ready-molded concrete products.
