On July 24, at Truong Long Commune, Phong Dien District (Vietnam), the Plant Protection Department, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City coordinated with 50 businesses, including INSEE Ecocycle, to organise the "Farmers Protecting the Environment." launching ceremony in 2019 - 2020.
The "Farmers Protecting the Environment" Program has been successfully implemented since 2012. Phase I (2012 - 2017) guides farmers from the safe and effective use of agricultural chemicals to destroying pesticide packaging, which is considered hazardous waste and requires unique treatment processes. In phase II (2017 - 2022), from the Winter-Spring season of 2018 - 2019, the Program expanded with the participation of more than 50 enterprises producing and trading pesticides nationwide with exceptional support. Supported by Insee Ecocyle, a leading unit in hazardous waste treatment in Vietnam.
Over the past 07 years, the Programme has mobilised farmers to collect more than 60 tonnes of waste pesticide packaging from the field. The amount of hazardous waste collected since 2017 has been disposed of at Insee Vietnam's Hon Chong Cement Plant in Kiên Giang Province using Co-processing technology, avoiding burial and reducing environmental emissions.
Mr. Le Van Thiet, Deputy Head of the Plant Protection Department and leader of the Programme, said: This year, the Programme carried out 02 batches. In the first six months of 2019, the Programme distributed 21,500 dedicated containers, built 105 additional container holes for chemical packaging after use, and organised 190 training sessions for more than 6,000 farmers in and outside the point model. Nearly 6,700 leaflets were distributed locally, and over 300 posters were posted at training sites. In this round of collecting used pesticide packaging, about 15.7 tons of packaging were transported to the plant for safe, eco-friendly disposal. Phase 2 will be conducted later this year.
