European Union (EU) member countries on March 4 reached an agreement to gradually ban the use of single-use plastic containers in restaurants and cafes from now until 2030 in an effort to "Green" canned goods in the European "Green Deal".

According to a press release from the European Council, the agreement to ban the use of single-use plastic containers in restaurants and cafes in the EU from now until 2030 is considered one of the core contents of the "Europe Green Deal".

Single-use plastic bottles in Europe.

Also limited in use until 2030 are other types of single-use plastic containers, such as mini shampoo bottles in hotels, small sauce containers, protective wrap-around suitcases at the airport, plastic fruit packaging, unprocessed plants, vegetables, ultra-light plastic bags...

The EU aims to reduce the use of packaging boxes across Europe by 5% from now until 2030 compared to 2018; by 2035, it will increase to 10% and then 15% by 2040.

Along with gradually limiting the use of plastic containers, the EU also sets a level of constraints on the requirement to reuse or reuse packaging in different fields, such as e-commerce, household appliances, and beverages. …from now until 2030.

From 2030, packaging containers must be made from recycled materials, and by 2035, they will be implemented on a European scale to promote the development of a Circular Economy.

Finally, starting in 2026, the EU will prohibit the intentional use of polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) on food packaging, such as pizza boxes. These are artificial chemicals used in many industries to make things waterproof and non-stick and are potential pathogens and permanent pollutants.

Banning single-use plastic will need to be approved by the European Parliament and the parliaments of the 27 EU member states before officially taking effect.
