Coca-Cola is testing removing labels on Sprite bottles in the UK to simplify recycling and reduce packaging material. The test applies to 500ml Sprite and Sprite Zero bottles, replacing the label with an embossed logo and laser-engraved product information. This helps increase recycling and reduce the risk of waste.
The trial took place at Tesco Express stores in multiple cities from January to March and is part of Coca-Cola's efforts to reduce packaging waste and promote environmental design.
While existing labels are recyclable, removing them will simplify the recycling process - by eliminating the step of separating the label from the bottle. Additionally, this will help reduce the amount of packaging material used.
Consumers at select Tesco Express stores in Brighton and Hove, Bristol, London, and Manchester will see "naked" (labelless) bottles on shelves from January to March.
This trial involves temporarily removing the label on the 500ml Sprite and Sprite Zero bottles and replacing it with an embossed logo on the front of the pack. It is not believed that laser-engraved products and nutrition will appear on the back.
Similar to the current Sprite bottles, the 100% clear recycled PET bottles have blue and clear labelled caps to identify them as Sprite or Sprite Zero.
In recent years, Coca-Cola has introduced a number of design changes to help reduce packaging waste, including turning Sprite bottles from green to clear plastic to make them easier to recycle.
They have also introduced lids that are attached to the bottle, ensuring that the lid remains connected to the bottle after opening to reduce the possibility of litter. The company has also invested in new designs to reduce the amount of packaging material used, such as creating lightweight bottles and minimising the material used in the outer packaging.
