Vietnamese students build "Boat pick up trash" using solar energy.

A group of Nha Trang University students recently constructed a trash skimmer boat using solar energy, which was accepted and scored outstanding. The concept proposes a more efficient method of collecting waste in water while reducing the damage to the environment.

Ngo Hoang Thinh (Grade 61 of Marine Engineering) - the project leader - stated that Vietnam still requires more knowledge on the issue of trash skimmer boats that have yet to be extensively used. This concept is being explored and developed in a number of different nations throughout the world in order to improve garbage collection efficiency while avoiding environmental concerns. Under the terms of their research, the group built a "Boat pick up trash" model with a maximum length of 1.2m and a capacity of 10kg of trash. The boat is made up of two parallel hulls. This structure contains a gap in the middle, which helps the ship gather and store waste. The use of trash skimmer boats will assist in reducing floating trash on rivers and lakes, safeguard creatures' living environments, and limit the danger of harming the global economy and tourism.

Model of a Double-hull Boat run by solar energy

The project was implemented more than 1 year and completed in March 2023. The boat's power source is based on solar energy that moves on the water. It has a conveyor system placed between the 02 hulls to pick up waste from the water to the deck that is gathered into containers on the craft. After the container is complete, the boat will return to shore to unload the waste and clean the container for reuse. The entire waste collection process is controlled remotely. The model can be designed to operate in different water areas, including rivers, lakes, and shallow water areas. The boat's hull is made of composite materials, with a design speed of 2 knots/hour. The engine battery is a 12V/7.5Ah sealed dry battery. During operation and testing, everything is managed remotely. The receiver and transmitter communicate via radio waves, which, to achieve perfection, the model was subjected to 03 tests.

Dr. Huynh Van Vu, Assessment Instructor, said that a trash skimmer boat using solar energy is a new solution to the problem of river and lake environmental pollution. With a two-hull design, the ship is able to carry more waste, ensuring stability as well as increasing the ability to collect trash before picking it up. Boats can operate in polluted areas and for long periods without refueling, which is an excellent advantage in minimizing environmental impact. The students' topic required the coordination of many majors and was novel and creative, so the acceptance committee ranked it as excellent.
