Engineers at the University of Colorado Boulder (USA) are using microalgae to create a Carbon-Neutral Cement.

The cement production process generates 7% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. We aim to use concrete as a mechanism to restore the planet. Moreover, today, we have the tools and technology to make it happen, said Wil Srubar, who leads the research team.

Cement is a component of concrete, the world's most widely manufactured material. Cement is primarily created from high-temperature-burned limestone, which emits billions of tons of CO2 each year. The researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder hope to replace limestone with calcium carbon generated by marine microalgae photosynthesis. In nature, this form of algae develops a substance that can absorb CO2 and store it in rocks, similar to how corals create reefs. Mr. Srubar claims that marine microalgae are simple to cultivate and that the compounds they generate may be synthesized for cement manufacturing.
