How did the International Day of Happiness come about? Let's find out.

In June 2012, at the United Nations Conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially declared that March 20 of each year was chosen as the International Day of Happiness. To date, International Happiness Day has been committed by 193 countries, including Vietnam.

The United Nations picked March 20 as the International Day of Happiness because it is a rare day of the year when the sun crosses the equator, resulting in equal lengths of day and night, symbolising the universe's balance and harmony. It also represents the balance between yin and yang, light and darkness, fantasies and reality... As a result, March 20 - International Day of Happiness - delivers the notion that balance and harmony are essential components of happiness.

This day was inspired by Bhutan, one of the world's happiest countries. Bhutan has long placed a higher importance on happiness than on national GDP. They analyse societal success using two criteria: the national happiness score and the economic index. The indices are generated using characteristics such as health, spirit, education, environment, management quality, and economic status.

The International Day of Happiness 2024 is "Happiness for everyone" with the slogan "Close-knit Family - the foundation of a prosperous nation".
